Project one focused on exploring the hierarchy of how text is organized on a page, as well as effective use of a modular grid. By creating numerous compositions out of the same information, set into the same grid, students explored how differences between compositions affected how the information was interpreted. Aspects such as which elements were considered dominate or subordinate, as well as what information was associated together with gestalt principles are examples of how a composition’s meaning could change. The project was divided into three phases, each of which became progressively less stringent with rules for compositions.
